2026 RBT requirements checklist

Short answer

To become an RBT in 2026 you need to be 18+, hold a high-school diploma, pass criminal background and abuse-registry checks within 180 days of paying the application fee, complete the 40-hour training over 5–180 days, pass the Initial Competency Assessment within 90 days before applying, submit the BACB application ($65), and pass the 85-question exam at Pearson VUE ($45).

  • I am at least 18 years old
    Must be true on the date you submit the application.
  • I have a high-school diploma or equivalent
  • Criminal background check passed
    No more than 180 days before paying the application fee. Comparable to checks for home health aides, child-care professionals and teachers in your community.
  • Abuse registry check passed
    Same 180-day window.
  • 40-hour training completed (2026 curriculum outline)
    Over no fewer than 5 and no more than 180 days, start and end dates inclusive. Keep the completion certificate.
  • Initial Competency Assessment (effective Jan 1, 2026) completed
    After the training and no more than 90 days before you submit the application. Assessor cannot be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you.
  • Attesting Certificant signed the attestation form
    No more than 90 days before paying for the application.
  • BACB application submitted and $65 fee paid
  • Pearson VUE appointment scheduled ($45)
  • Took the free diagnostic and generated a study plan
    Do this before booking the exam date.
